A physical theatre performance. Four women from Iceland and Finland delve into the world of masculinity to share stories about love, fathers, sexuality, pride and the fear of being a burden. Based on dozens of interviews with male-identifying people from different countries as well as the creators’ own personal stories, it asks questions about men’s experiences of toxic masculinity, and of women’s experiences of patriarchy. Them unpacks many of the issues surrounding gender with tenderness, humour and empathy, applying a female gaze to understanding men’s experiences of masculinity, including the pain of not fitting in, the thrill of finding one's strength, and the sorrow of not knowing how to cry. The performance was premiered at Tjarnarbíó in Reykjavík at Reykjavík Fringe Festival in 2022 and has since then travelled to Trixter Teater in Gothenburg, Jacksons Lane Theatre in London, Pleasance Theatre in Edinburgh and to Aranya Theater Festival in China.
Unnur Elísabet Gunnarsdóttir invites 8 artists to create duets with her - which turns into a feast of short stories about New worlds.
It all started when I went to a poet’s house for tea. One day I decided to buy a book of poetry as a birthday present for my friend and I thought, why not have it signed? So I contacted the poet, Elísabet Jökulsdóttir, who invited me in for tea. We started chatting and when the she learned that I was a singer she got me to improvise a melody to one of the poems and there we found out that actually this book of poetry was indeed libretto to an opera. The only thing missing was the music but with composer Anna Halldórsdóttir on board that problem was solved. I got Spindrift theatre involved, we were joined by cellist Júlía Mogensen for the work in progress staged in a concert version in Mengi at Dark Music Days in 2023. This project is so close to my heart and I really look forward to developing it further.
